SAG-AFTRA On Strike

SAG-AFTRA+On+Strike

Since companies like Disney and Warner Brothers think actors are just tools in the business world, they think the actors who already don’t make a lot of money will bend down and kiss their feet when they decide to replace them with AI. Now I’m pretty sure that everyone knows this story but in case you don’t I will be going over the whole situation right now, what movies are being delayed, what is safe, and how the strike is going. and the dangers of AI.

This all started with the writer’s strike, which was about being paid more than they already were. An example is the writer of the Daredevil episode in She-Hulk Cody Ziglar being paid $396. This strike delayed movies coming out in 2025 like Thunderbolts and The Batman and some 2024 movies by a little bit until it was revealed actors were going on strike. Now films and shows like Daredevil: Born Again and Deadpool 3 were being delayed.

The reason for the actors’ strike was that companies like Disney wanted to scan actors’ faces with AI and use it for the rest of their lives and the actors would only get one day of pay. Streaming also factored into this with actors and writers not being paid much since most of their money comes from the box office which doesn’t exist in streaming, so they were paid in residuals which are little compared to the box office. Now you might be wondering “What movies are being delayed?” well if you were excited about movies like Challengers, Ghostbusters Afterlife 2, Godzilla x Kong, Dune Part 2, and Kraven The Hunter I have bad news for you cause those are being delayed due to the strikes. Now as I am writing this the writer’s strike has ended and the actors are next to meet with studio executives and the voice actors for videogame companies might go on strike soon but as of now anything made by A24 will be fine since they are distributors, any project that has finished production like the Five Nights At Freedy’s movie and Loki, and any videogame that has already gone gold(going gold means the game is finished) like Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake, Assassin’s Creed: MIrage, etc. Now we can’t forget that one of the main reasons this is happening is because of AI. Now it should be pretty obvious that we should use humans instead of AI but more and more people are using AI. Sure this can be used properly like in Secret Invasion where they used AI for the intro of the show since it was something that isn’t human pretending to be human but most of the time it is horrible. A good example of this is this comparison of two drawings. One was made by me and the other was put through an AI generator I want you to guess which one people would say is better.

If you said the photo on the left you would be right. Sure there are a lot of mistakes like the hands and the web he’s swinging from but if people already think that the AI drawing is better imagine how much worse this will be in a couple of years when technology has advanced and AI will have the power to make drawings, movies, and shows seem like humans made them. Now I leave you all with one question, should we be impressed that AI can replicate what a human can do, or should we be scared of it and how it might even take our jobs like how it was about to happen with the actors and writers?

About the Contributor
Elhaan Khan
Elhaan Khan was born in Reno, Nevada in 2009. Though being born in the USA, Elhaan spent his toddler years in Bangladesh where most of his family is. When he was three years old he and his family moved to America where he would spend the rest of his school life. When he came here the first movie he saw was Guardians of the Galaxy, making one of the first memories he has of a talking space raccoon. In the past ten years, he has participated in a class play, learned how to play both the piano and guitar, found a love for sci-fi and horror movies, started reading a lot more adult comic books like Last Ronin and Invincible, etc. I look forward to covering stories for the Spartan Scroll.
