Girls Flag Football may Become a League Sport in California

Next school year girls’ flag football may be introduced as a league. The CIF or the California Interscholastic Federation is the governing body for high school sports. Their vote in February will dictate whether or not girls’ flag football will be coming to high school. While this decision will not impact you now it will when you advance to CVHS or another high school. The proposal to have girls’ flag football in 10 sections including the California South section as an interscholastic sport in the 2023-2024 school year seems like a favored choice. If girl’s flag football gets passed in California it would join Nevada and Alabama as states that offer the sport to girls.

What is Flag Football?

Flag football is a game where two teams (with 5-8 people) compete against each other to score points. To score points a player must bring the ball across the other team’s goal line, this is called a touchdown. A touchdown is 6 points and a safety is worth 2 points. Safety is when the offense gets tackled by the defense in their end zone. The defense would get the point. At the end of the game whichever team has the most points is the winner.
If girls’ flag football gets voted in this would be a major step to include girls in sports. It would encourage people to participate in new sports. It will also show everyone that sports can be played by anyone and not just a specific gender. This could prompt more sports to be voted to be inclusive to everyone.

What about Rosemont?

While there is no girls’ flag football team at Rosemont. Girls can still try out for the boy’s team. At Rosemont, if there is no team for your gender you can try out for the team for the opposite gender. I asked a few girls if they were interested in joining the team and none of them were interested. This change would still open new opportunities and encourage people to join sports no matter what
