The Minecraft Movie Trailer was posted to X on Sept. 4, 2024 by the Official Minecraft account, as well as on YouTube (Warner Bros. Pictures). Many people do not approve of the adaptation. Minecraft is a game many people grew up playing, a movie adaptation sounds like an awesome idea. Sadly, when the trailer was released people were not happy. People online believe the cast is basic and should have been completely animated instead of partly live-action. Others believe the plot seems dull and uninteresting. Because of that, will the Minecraft movie be a success?
The cast consists of Jack Black as “Steve,” Jason Mamoa as “Garrett Garrison,” Emma Myers as “Natalie,” Danielle Brooks as “Dawn,” and Sebastian Ugene Hansen as “Henry.” (All of which were shown in the trailer.) The trailer begins with Garrett, Natalie, Dawn, and Henry entering a pixelated Minecraft-esque world through a blue nether portal. A normal nether portal is purple but people online believe it could be a tie to an aether portal. The Aether portal was part of a mod that allowed you to create a blue nether portal using ‘glowstone’ and water instead of obsidian and flint and steel.
After the main characters enter through the portal, they look around the Minecraft world. The four look to the side and notice a pink sheep, one of the rarest natural spawning mobs. The next problem is how the sheep looked. The sheep looked strange and unrealistic (according to Minecraft standards). People online believe that it doesn’t represent the mob well. After the pink sheep appears, the main character of the game, Steve, appears engulfed in fire that quickly burns out. When he appears he says, “I am Steve!”, people say he did not deliver the line well and will not play the character well. The trailer continues to show ‘piglins’ and ‘ghasts’, which are mobs from the nether, a dimension in Minecraft. The mobs were being portrayed as villains. People believe making them the antagonists is too bland. They show more clips of the world in its pixelated forms. For example, they show Minecraft builds and howling wolves, or a floating tree which relates to a joke about how “gravity doesn’t exist in Minecraft.”
Rosemont students also had opinions about the trailer. “No, It was too hyper-realistic and the animation looked absolutely bogus,” said Leia Armstrong when asked whether they felt like the game was portrayed well.“No, the Minecraft movie will not be a success because real life mixed with the Minecraft world makes absolutely no sense. It all should be animated! Plus the pink sheep looks kind of goofy.” said Tigran Karslian.
The Minecraft Movie Trailer is not being received well whatsoever but hopefully it can prove people wrong. Many people are criticizing the movie, like the bland plot, bad animations, and mistreatment rumors. If there were to be a person to like it, someone who enjoys adventure movies might enjoy this. Going off of the trailer Minecraft players will probably not enjoy this movie but they might see the movie out of curiosity and is not expected to represent the game well. The movie will not live up to previous expectations from before the trailer was released. The trailer was not at all a success.
