This school year, a new Math Club was created in RMS. This club was founded by a 7th grader named Olivia Jung. The club is held in Mrs. Lee’s room, Room 6303. Mrs. Lee is a 7th-grade math teacher. However, she only supervises this club. Olivia explains the reason she chose Mrs. Lee to be the sponsor for her club. “Mrs. Lee is my amazing math teacher. She is very understanding. I believed Mrs. Lee would be the perfect supervisor who would be supportive and encouraging of the club.”
In this club, people solve challenging math problems printed on worksheets while eating their lunch. They can choose to either work out the problems with their friends, or they can choose to work independently. If stuck, there are many people that can help, such as Olivia and the groupmates/friends that are sitting with you.
Olivia says she started this club because she “wanted students at Rosemont Middle School to be able to experience contest math problems and challenge themselves.” She says she “…also wanted the goal of this club for students to meet other peers with the same interests and get to know each other better” and “hoped many students could expand their math skills and apply their new knowledge both inside and outside of school…” She loves math because she “always enjoyed math and loved numbers.” She says, “Just the process of playing around with them and the fact that there is only one solution, made math so intriguing to me.”
This club has gotten many positive reviews from its members. When asked, “What is your opinion on the Math Club?” Penny, a 7th grader, responded: “I love the Math Club! It’s fun and educational.” Sarah, a 7th grader who also attends the Math Club, responded, “Math Club is fun [because] you get to work on math while having fun with your friends.” So, have time at lunch? Love math? Don’t be shy, and come to the Math Club in Mrs. Lee’s room to have fun and do math.
