Easter is a festival of the Christian Church. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion. According to Britannica, “Easter is celebrated by Christians as a joyous holiday because it represents the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament and the revelation of God’s salvific plan for all of humankind. In commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus, Easter also celebrates the defeat of death and the hope of salvation”. Easter takes place on the first Sunday after the first full moon, following the
Spring Equinox. The Spring Equinox is when the Earth’s axis and its orbit are lined up, therefore both hemispheres get the same amount of sunlight. For this reason, Easter can take place on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25. This year, Easter will take place on March 31, 2024. Easter is celebrated with eggs because it represents the rebirth of Christ and is seen as an ancient symbol of fertility.
On Ash Wednesday, 46 Sundays before Easter, Christians who are ages 14 and up give up something they are fond of, which is called lent. Some Christians also fast for the day. Christians participate in Lent because it is a remembrance of Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness and his defeat of temptation. Then on the day of Easter, you celebrate with a feast accompanied by all of your family and friends.
