On Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Wednesday, Dec. 4, Rosemont’s second and third spirit assemblies took place in the amphitheater, respectively. The second spirit assembly started with a score of 30-25 and ended with a score of 50-35, in favor of eighth grade. The third spirit assembly started with the previous score of 50-35, and ended with a score of 62-58, in favor of eighth grade.
Both events began with the customary spinning of the R.O.C.K.S. wheel—R.O.C.K.S. tickets that were collected over the past month were drawn, and the six lucky winners (three for each event) were brought to the bottom of the amphitheater to spin the wheel. Here, eighth graders won their first five spirit points in the second spirit assembly, when eighth-grader Svetlana Sahakyan’s spin landed on the “5 Spirit Points for your grade level” section. None of the other spins increased by spirit points.
The first game of the second spirit assembly was Octopus Relay. Sixteen seventh and eighth graders locked their arms together in groups of four, essentially creating an octopus. The goal of the game was to be the first team to grab a plate from one end of the course, bring it back to the start, and get the plate covered in shaving cream before the other grade. Both eighth-grade teams experienced difficulties at the start of the race, leaving the seventh-grade teams with a huge lead, allowing them to win five spirit points.
While the second game was being set up, the ASB presidents for each grade level led their cheer, and the class colors were counted. Seventh grade, chanting “Go, go, white, white we’re here to win the fight, fight! had quite a loud cheer, a big improvement from their last performance, but eighth grade, chanting “B L U E, that’s the way to victory!” managed to be louder.
After this, the second game took place, which was the blind obstacle course. Two seventh graders competed against two eighth graders in teams. One of the competitors was blindfolded, while the other had to direct the blindfolded competitor verbally. If the blindfolded person ran into one of the obstacles, the contestant directing them would have water dumped on their head. The obstacle course was split into two—the seventh-grade side and the eighth-grade side. It started with a limbo, then a hurdle (made of two chairs connected), then a moving barrier (ASB member walking back and forth across the width of the course), and lastly a series of bowling pins. Seventh grade could not continue their momentum through this challenge, and their guide for the blindfolded contestant was soaked in water multiple times. Therefore, eighth grade won five more spirit points.
At the end of the second spirit assembly, Ms. Khatch tallied up all the points and announced that eighth grade won the blindfolded obstacle course, sat down first, and had the louder class cheer, for 20 points total. Seventh grade won class colors and the octopus relay, for a total of 10 points. Eighth grade now has a steady lead of 50-35, or 15 points.
The third spirit assembly followed a similar structure. History teachers Ms. Fox and Ms. Bakas were the judges.
The first game for the third Spirit Assembly was a classic, played every year at RMS: Get the Grinch. The goal of the game was to hit the ASB President, Penny Park, dressed as the Grinch, with water balloons. Seventh and eighth-grade contestants lined up about halfway up the amphitheater, and after a few minutes of throwing water balloons, only one contestant from each grade hit the Grinch. The game ended in a tie, which meant that each grade won five spirit points.
After, ASB led the class cheers, and the judges counted up the number of students wearing their class colors.
The third spirit assembly’s second game was Potato Sack Relay. Contestants from both grade levels had to get into a potato sack, hop across the amphitheater, unwrap the presents on the other side of the amphitheater, then grab the items inside and bring them back to the start. Both grade levels stayed even for the first half, but eighth-grade managed to take a huge lead in the second half. However, eighth-grade’s final racer forgot to bring the item inside the present back to the start of the course, giving seventh-grade a miraculous win and five more spirit points.
Finally, Ms. Khatch tallied up the points. Seventh-grade did a great job keeping up with eighth, and they substantially lowered the points gap. Two points were given to eighth and three points were given to seventh for sitting down first, class cheer, and class colors. Seventh-grade got four points for sportsmanship, while eighth-grade only got one. Seventh got 10 points from the games and eighth only got five (Get the Grinch tie). This is a total of 12 points for eighth and 23 for seventh. Eighth-grade remains in the lead, 62-58, but the seventh graders are very close to winning. The next spirit assembly will be held on the first Wednesday of January, outside of winter break. Make sure to wear your class colors!
