In an article published by the New York Times, by Maya Salam in 2017, “Thanksgiving facts and Thanksgiving myths have been blended together for years like so much gravy and mashed potatoes, and separating them is just complicated.” So, this article will not be talking about the historical part of Thanksgiving, but what it resembles today.
Thanksgiving is about being with your friends and family and gathering a big table filled with delicious food like turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, an assortment of pies, and a delicious cranberry sauce. But what is it all about? It all started when the colonial pilgrims had a harvest meal in 1621, but it was only declared a national holiday on October 3, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln announced that the nation would celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on November 26, expressing gratitude for a pivotal Union Army victory at Gettysburg. It is celebrated in both the U.S. and Canada.
The meaning of Thanksgiving is in the name. It’s about being thankful and giving to people, and you can give anything, your time, money, and your kindness. It’s a time where everybody can come together, and have a delicious meal made or bought with love and care.
