Rosemont’s Girls Soccer team beat local rivals Roosevelt in a smashing four-nil win on the Upper Field, after school on Thursday Oct. 19.
Undefeated through three games, the soccer team caught the attention of many students at Rosemont. Compared to previous home matches, there were many more students. Parents of the players also turned up.
Roosevelt, wearing red, black, and white, was on the school side of the field. Rosemont, wearing white and blue, started on the far side of the field.
The game started out at a slow pace. Neither team could get a fluid attack or shots on goal. Rosemont dominated possession, however, and the wingers were often in positions to lob the ball into the box. Roosevelt faced challenges in creating scoring opportunities, frequently losing possession and resorting to long passes over the Rosemont defenders.
They scored the first goal towards the end of the first quarter. Tiana Barseghian, an eighth grader, took a shot from outside the box after a poor clearance by a Roosevelt defender. The shot was above the goalkeeper’s head, but it slipped through her hands as it landed gracefully in the goal.
Rosemont kept the pressure up, constantly getting off shots to force the goalkeeper to make saves. Despite a few slip-ups from the Rosemont defense on Roosevelt counterattacks, they conceded no goals.
As the halftime whistle was imminent, Rosemont still had a few more minutes to score a second goal. A low corner went through the goalkeeper’s legs, making it the second error for the player. Right behind her was Bella Pardo, who had none of the goals to miss. The halftime score was two-nil in favor of Rosemont.
Rosemont didn’t falter after the long break. The attackers got multiple shots off before they scored their third goal. Amelia Kramer took a powerful shot from inside the box, and a good save from the goalkeeper bounced off to the side, where Bella Pardo had an easy tap-in. The score was now three-nil.
Halftime allowed Rosemont to make substitutions, so their attack was fresh as ever. A brilliant series of passes by the attack and a skillful dribble and cutback by Sabrina Lee allowed seventh grader Ella Gorgorian to take a shot. Although it was driven fast towards the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance at a save, it merely hit the post. Eventually, Rosemont scored their fourth and final goal, as a low cross to eighth grader Lacy White was easily slotted past the onlooking Roosevelt goalkeeper.
As the end of the game neared, Amelia Kramer placed a cross to a wide-open Makenzie Ulfeldt, giving Rosemont one final attempt at a goal. Makenzie ran toward it, and half-volleyed it within feet of the six-yard box. Her attempt was wide, however, and Rosemont missed an opportunity for a fifth goal.
A few minutes later, the referee blew the full-time whistle, and Rosemont easily sealed off their fourth win in a row at a score of four-nil.
