Rosemont is known for having a basketball, soccer, volleyball, and even cross country team. But did you know they also had their very own girls lacrosse team? They meet every Tuesday and Thursday on the upper field after school and practice until 4:45 p.m. But what is lacrosse? And what does the Rosemont team have to say about it?
WHAT IS LACROSSE? Lacrosse was first known as stickball and was played by many indigenous tribes in North America for training and religious reasons. It was adopted by European settlers in the 17th century, and today lacrosse is the National summer sport of Canada and is played in at least 69 countries in six continents.
“It is a great mix of skills from soccer, basketball, and softball. You could even mix in many other sports! Also, it is the only truly 100 percent American sport, having been developed by the Native Americans of the Eastern United States and Canada as a way to celebrate, compete, and settle disputes,” says Coach Scott, the Rosemont girls lacrosse coach.
Lacrosse is a fast-paced game played with a stick that is used to scoop, catch, and throw the ball into the goal. To find out more about lacrosse and its rules, click here.
WHAT DOES OUR ROSEMONT TEAM THINK OF GIRLS LACROSSE?
“It is a great team sport and very exciting! It is a great way to make lots of friends, both on your team and the other team. With all the running and skills involved, it is a great way to get into and remain in shape. Girls build a lot of confidence doing something that very few people know how to do” says Coach Scott, and many people seem to agree.
“I really enjoy lacrosse. It’s a super fun sport and once again, I mostly enjoy it because I get to play it with my friends” says Nicole Oh, who just started playing lacrosse. “I would recommend it to anyone willing to find a new fun sport or trying to find new friends because everyone is super supportive and nice, and just to put it simply, it’s a really fun game.”
“It’s a sport where you can just have fun and play around instead of being really serious and kind of boring. It’s super upgoing and it’s really fast, and you have a lot of fun with it” adds Natalia Van Leuven, a 7th grader who has been playing lacrosse for years after her sister Maya.
Needless to say, many girls enjoy playing lacrosse and would recommend it to everyone, whether it’s just in your backyard or playing for our very own Rosemont team.
The girl’s lacrosse game schedule hasn’t been finalized yet, but they will but playing at least four games, against La Cañada and Westridge. When they start playing, however, everyone is invited to watch our Rosemont girl’s lacrosse team.
