Thursday Oct. 12 marked our Girls Soccer Team’s third match. Undefeated up to that point, they had already beat Toll and Roosevelt with a difference of more than three goals in each game. The match was also Rosemont’s second home game.
Wearing the school-famous white with blue numbering, Rosemont started on the northeastern end of the Upper Field (the side far from the entrance) while Wilson, wearing blue and yellow, started on the southwestern side, where the cheerleaders were.
As fans from both teams began to pour in, the snack stand had a huge mob of middle schoolers and parents waiting for the game to start. The cheerleaders started with a few chants before the whistle blew and Wilson kicked off.
An early push from the visitors lead to a free-kick in a dangerous area, only a few yards outside the box. However, a special rule makes all free-kicks indirect, except if they are in the penalty box, making it a penalty. The Wilson free-kick taker didn’t know this, so when the ball dipped into the goal’s net, past the goalkeeper’s hands, no goal was given and a goal kick followed.
Throughout the first half, Rosemont completely dominated possession, but their attacks were going to waste against the pacey Wilson fullbacks. Wilson was also winning more headers and crosses, making it hard for the Rosemont attack to score.
Towards the end of the first half, a low driven cross by a Rosemont winger was misplaced, creating an easy diving save for the Wilson goalkeeper. This was not to be, as the cross slipped through the goalkeeper’s gloves and Rosemont scored a tap-in.
When the second half started, more of the same continued. Rosemont played possession based with plenty of passing, while Wilson more or less lived off the counterattack. A goal similar to the first occurred, with a low driven cross being mishandled by the Wilson goalkeeper leading to a simple finish.
The Spartan’s final goal was off a corner, where a perfect delivery found a Rosemont player’s head. The goalkeeper stood no chance, and the final goal sealed off a big win for Rosemont, keeping their win-streak alive.
