Mother’s Day

MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday May 14 and is a day to honor mothers all across the world. Mother’s Day became a holiday in the United States in 1914 by Anna Jarvis. Ann Reeves Jarvis, mother of Anna Jarvis, started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to help teach women how to properly take care of kids. Julia Ward Howe, Juliet Calhoun Blakely, Mary Towles Sasseen, and Frank Hering were also early activists for Mother’s Day. In May 1908, Anna had the first Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. After the success of her first Mother’s Day event, President Woodrow Wilson established the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.
