This Savage Song is a fiction-fantasy book written by V.E. Schwab. It is set in the fictional city of Verity, a city that is divided between North and South V-City. Verity is a city plagued by monsters born from the crimes of Verity’s many citizens. North V-City is run by Callum Harker, a cruel man who makes his citizens pay for protection against the monsters. South V-City is run by Henry Flynn, who is more fair-minded and simply wants to keep the peace between the city’s two halves. The story centers around two teens: Kate Harker, Callum Harker’s daughter, and August Flynn, the son of Henry Flynn. Kate wants to prove herself to her father by being ruthless, while August, who is secretly a monster, wants nothing but to be human. When Kate is sent home after intentionally being kicked out of her sixth boarding school, August is given the chance to keep an eye on her and takes it. However, after a failed assassination attempt on Kate, they must flee for their lives.
This book was entertaining and constantly kept me wondering what would happen next. The character development was amazing, and the characters felt real throughout the whole story. It was very well-written and interesting, with a climax that is entirely worth the read. The same can be said for its sequel, Our Dark Duet, which is just as entertaining as This Savage Song, if not more. If you haven’t read this series, you should.
