Community service hours are something that should be gratifying, but are just stress-inducing for high school students. In most GUSD high schools, one must complete at least 75 hours of community service to graduate. This can be stressful for students juggling classes, extracurriculars, and their social life. Community service should not be something that people just count the hours off of, it should be an enjoyable experience. So, here are some ways that you can get community service hours quicker, and enjoy them more:
FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Inviting close friends and family to volunteer with you could motivate you to volunteer, and could make the experience fun! If you volunteer at a nursing home, homeless shelter, red cross event or anywhere else alone, you might feel lonely, confused, and not sure if you want to go again. But, if you go with a friend or close family member, you two can work together to figure things out, and have fun on the way!
FIND OUT TEEN VOLUNTEER OPTIONS
Finding out teen volunteer options can help you not only get volunteer hours that are fun, but they’re also a way to make new friends and connections! Meeting new people from different schools might also be a good way to find other volunteer opportunities. Making new friends also makes volunteering much more fun!
LEARNING OPPERTUNITIES
Volunteering can be very stressful when you know that you have piles of homework at home, grade-altering tests to study for, and a mountain of other things that you could be doing. What can really relieve this stress is if you find places to volunteer that woul be a learning opportunity. For example, volunteering at a library could help you get your reading done, or you could tutor students at your local elementary school, which will help you review basic things that might help you on future tests.
CJSF
CJSF is a club in Rosemont middle school that can help you get your community service hours done quicker, and it can help you make friends that you can volunteer with! It is run by kind and helpful teachers, and student volunteer leaders who are willing to help.
Overall, there are many ways to make Community service a fun learning opportunity, instead of mindless hours that you must spend to get into the college of your choice. Communiy Service should be gratifying and interesting, something that not only leaves you with the feeling of accomplishment, but also like you didn’t waste 75-100 hours of your high school and middle school life.
